Everytime that I'm told that lunch is "walking tacos," I spend the lunch hour trying to figure out how soft tacos and/or taco salad is "walking." After three years of bewilderment, this evening I searched via the web for "walking taco," I have discovered that it is a Midwestern term for the Texas deliciousness, Frito Pie...though it does NOT resemble the Frito Pie anymore. Nowadays, it is traditionally (if you consider the last 25 years to be "traditional"), a single-serving Doritos chips in the bag, topped with seasoned beef, beans, cheese, sour cream, lettuce, tomatoes and any other "taco" condiments that the eater desires...but no chili at all! The walking part comes from the "in-the-bag" portability.
For anyone else curious about the development of the walking taco, here's the clicky!
